Relationships between Gypsy, Roma and Traveller (GRT) communities and the settled population are characterised on both sides by fear and mistrust. These perspectives are based largely on stereotypes rather than fact and actual experience.
Few members of the settled population know much about GRT communities, except what they learn from the press and other media.
For example, do you know:
- What distinguishes the various GRT communities?
- How the life expectancy of GRTs compares with the rest of the population?
- Whether GRT communities are covered by any equality legislation?
- Whether GRT communities have a right to live or camp on their own land?
Astren offers training sessions that address these and many other questions. Our aim is to:
- Provide factual information about GRT communities, cultures and lifestyles
- Challenge myths and stereotypes
- Raise awareness
We also offer a face-to-face (or shuttle) mediation service in conflict situations involving individuals or groups from different communities.
Astren can support agencies in addressing their responsibilities towards GRT communities and improving access to services. Promoting understanding and good practice with respect to these minority groups has wide-ranging impact on good practice in general.
Many organisations and workforces find that they benefit from a better understanding of issues affecting GRT communities, enabling them to offer services that can be more readily accessed by Gypsies, Roma and Travellers.
